Detailed requirements

All application materials should be in English. Only complete applications with all required materials will be considered for review.

1. High school transcript

Prospective applicants must submit a transcript of all high school courses completed up to the point of application. High school GPA must be at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or 75 (on a 100 scale). We pay special attention to math, physics, chemistry and other related subjects.

2. China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA)

CSCA Mathematics score is mandatory for official admission, regulated by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. Applicants who have not yet taken the CSCA Mathematics exam may submit other materials containing mathematics scores initially. Those who pass the university's selection process must supplement their CSCA scores by June 30, 2026.

China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) is a standardized test designed for international students who plan to pursue undergraduate degrees in China. Organized by China Scholarship Council (CSC) and jointly developed with experts from Chinese universities, CSCA assesses language proficiency and academic readiness of the students, helping them better prepare for undergraduate studies in China.

 3. English language certificate

Non-native speakers of English must have a TOEFL score of 90 or above, or an IELTS score of 6 or above.

The applicants may be exempted from taking either exam if their SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score is 650 or above, or if both ACT Reading and English scores are 27 or above, and if they have recently completed at least four years of rigorous academic study in any of the following countries: Anguilla, Antigua, Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Canada (except Quebec), Cayman Islands, Dominica, Federated States of Micronesia, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Montserrat, New Zealand, Seychelles, Shetland Islands, St. Kitts-Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland), United States (other than Puerto Rico), US Virgin Islands, Singapore. (Those in American Schools and British Schools abroad may also be exempted if at least four years of rigorous academic study have recently been completed and scores meet above standards.)

*All international students must pass HSK Level 4 (Chinese Language Test) to meet SJTU's graduation requirement.

4. Curriculum Vitae and Personal Statement

In their curriculum vitae, the applicants may list their education, research experience, and relevant skills to show their academic background and performance. In their personal statement, applicants should articulate their primary motivations for pursuing the program and detail their specific academic interests. The statement should effectively bridge the applicants’ past experiences with their future career objectives, demonstrating why the program is uniquely suited to their goals.

5. Recommendation Letters

Two recommendation letters in English are required: one from the high school counselor and one from a core academic teacher.

6. Standardized International Test Scores

SAT, ACT, AP, A-Level, IB are all accepted, but predicted A-level or IB scores are NOT accepted.

7. Other Required Documents

1. Financial guarantee proven deposit of not less than CNY 100,000 (or equivalent in foreign currency).

2. Applicants who will be under the age of 18 as of September 1 of the enrollment year must provide a Letter of Guarantee from a legal guardian residing in China  (a notarized document approved by SJTU is required). (Document: GUARANTEE STATEMENT)

3.1 The nationality or household registration of both the applicant's parents, such as a passport or an ID card.

3.2 Applicants with one or both parents who are Chinese citizens must provide:

3.2.1 Certificate of the applicant's foreign nationality obtained at birth or afterward.

3.2.2 For applicants who acquired foreign nationality at birth:

a. If one or both parents were Chinese citizens and had permanent residence abroad at the time of the applicant's birth, provide the corresponding permanent residence proof of the parent(s).

b. If one or both parents were Chinese citizens and did not have permanent residence abroad at the time of the applicant's birth, provide a certificate of the applicant's renunciation of Chinese nationality for at least four years by April 30 of the application year.

3.2.3 For applicants who are originally Chinese citizens and later acquired foreign nationality, provide proof of cancellation of their Chinese residence registration and renunciation of Chinese nationality for at least four years by April 30 of the application year.

3.2.4 All visas, residence permits, and entry/exit records for China, starting from the applicant's first passport.

Note: Applicants who previously held a “People's Republic of China Travel Document” or “People's Republic of China Exit and Entry Permit” must provide the relevant documentation as in section 3.2.3.

8. Interview

Applicants who submit all required physical documents and successfully pass the initial evaluation will be invited for an interview.
