Global Institute of Future Technology and Northwest Electric Power Design Institute Launch Joint Research Center for Energy Storage and Green Low‑Carbon Technologies
Global Institute of Future Technology (GIFT), Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Northwest Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd. (NWEPDI) of China Power Engineering Consulting Group signed an agreement on May 15, 2026, to establish a Joint Research Center of New Energy Storage and Green Low‑Carbon Technologies. The signing and unveiling ceremony took place at GIFT.
Attendees from NWEPDI included Dong Shi, General Manager; Xiaohui Zhao, Deputy Chief Engineer and the Director of the Science and Technology Innovation Center; Wei Wang, Deputy General Manager of the Renewable Energy Development Division and Director of the Technology Center; and Dr. Wang Runyu and Dr. Ye Qiang from the Science and Technology Innovation Center.
From SJTU's side were Jun Ni, Dean of GIFT; Tianshu Ge, Chairperson of GIFT Council; Guangwu Liu, Deputy Director of the Office of Science and Technology Cooperation at the Division of Research Management; as well as faculty and students from GIFT and the School of Mechanical Engineering. The signing ceremony is chaired by Juqing Wu, the Director of the Scientific Research Office of GIFT.
The joint research center will focus on emerging energy storage solutions and the green hydrogen‑ammonia‑methanol industrial chain. It will combine the university's strength in fundamental research and the enterprise's engineering expertise to drive breakthroughs and industrial applications. It will also train talents through real-world industry challenges, aligning academic training with corporate needs.
Jun Ni extended a warm welcome to NWEPDI representatives' visit. He provided an overview of GIFT's education philosophy and research strengths. He also introduced the college's three-pillar industry‑university collaboration model built around people, problems and platforms. He highlighted joint student cultivation, research targeting real-world industry needs, and the development of collaborative lab facilities.
Dong Shi noted the company's long‑term commitment to energy transition under the national plan to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality. He introduced the enterprise's main achievements, including green hydrogen, low‑cost flexible hydrogen production, and integrated clean-energy processes. He also expressed strong anticipation for the upcoming collaboration to drive technological breakthroughs and industrial applications in new energy storage and green low-carbon technology.
Tianshu Ge and Xiaohui Zhao signed the agreement. Jun Ni and Dong Shi unveiled the joint research center.
After the ceremony, both sides discussed key areas for collaboration, including green energy technology R&D, talent development, and platform sharing. In addition, Tianshu Ge introduced several mature, ready‑to‑deploy energy-conservation technologies and environmental-protection cases developed by the college.
