SJTU and PNU Jointly Host Academic Exchange on Next-Generation Battery Technologies

On August 19, 2026, the Future Battery Research Center at the Global Institute of Future Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the College of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology of Pusan National University (PNU) co-organized an academic exchange event at the SJTU–CATL Collaborative Laboratory. The event brought together more than 60 faculty members and graduate students from both institutions to discuss next-generation battery technologies and AI-empowered materials research.

The opening ceremony featured Professor Soohyung Kim, Dean of College of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and Director of the Energy Fusion Technology Research Center, PNU, who introduced his project “CELLBACK” (Circular Resource Integration for Full‑Lifecycle Battery Recycling). The nine‑year project, supported by the Glocal Lab Program of the Korean Ministry of Education, aims to build a comprehensive technology system for resource circulation throughout the entire life cycle of spent batteries, paired with a talent development program. Hua Bao, Associate Dean of GIFT, presented the college's education mission, discipline structure, and future directions. Associate Professor Jiayu Wan, Executive Director of the Future Battery Research Center, shared recent research progress in solid‑state batteries, lithium‑metal batteries, and intelligent battery management systems.

During the academic symposium, graduate students from SJTU and PNU presented on topics ranging from agglomeration mechanisms of carbon nanotubes in thick electrodes, and data‑driven battery R&D, to Joule Heating‑based material synthesis and silicon‑based solid‑state batteries.

Visiting scholars toured the Future Battery Research Center and shared laboratories, learning about research facilities for solid‑electrolyte synthesis and in‑situ battery characterization. A poster session showcased cutting‑edge work on computational screening of solid electrolytes, direct regeneration of spent lithium cobalt oxide cathodes, machine‑learning‑assisted battery R&D, and current collector design for lithium-sulfur batteries. At the closing ceremony, the best poster awards were presented to outstanding scholars.

The academic exchange marked the beginning of deeper collaboration in energy materials between SJTU and PNU. Both parties will co‑organize workshops and seminars, engage in joint student cultivation, and expand academic exchanges to enhance students’ global competitiveness and academic potential. Looking ahead, GIFT will strengthen its role in fostering an open and vibrant atmosphere for international academic exchanges and nurture globally competitive, strategic leaders for future technology development.
