Kai Wu, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Chief Scientist of CATL, Delivers Keynote Speech at the 21st GIFT Distinguished Lecture Series
On December 12, 2025, Kai Wu, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chief Scientist of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), and Distinguished Professor of the Global Institute of Future Technology, delivered a lecture titled "Embracing New Energy Opportunities, Shouldering Responsibilities of the New Era".

The attendees included Ye Tang, Chairman of Shanghai BOCHU Electronic Technology Co., Ltd.; Lin Lu, Co-founder and General Manager of the Precision Micro-Fabrication Division; Lifeng Xi, Executive Vice President of SJTU; Yadong Liu, Executive Vice Dean of the School of Electrical Engineering; Rui Li, Vice Dean of the School of Electrical Engineering; Xiaoyuan Zhang, Deputy Director of the Development and Liaison Office; Jun Ni, Dean of GIFT; Tianshu Ge, Chairperson of the GIFT Council; Sun Jin, Executive Dean of GIFT, along with SJTU faculty and students. The event was hosted by Beibei Du, a doctoral student from the class of 2024.


Lifeng Xi extended a warm welcome and sincere gratitude to Academician Wu on behalf of SJTU. Xi conveyed the university's congratulations on Wu's election to the Chinese Academy of Engineering and highlighted his outstanding achievements in lithium-ion batteries and electrochemical energy storage. As a distinguished alumnus of SJTU, he has also played an important role in fostering industry-academia collaboration and talent development.

In his speech, Academician Wu elaborated on the historic opportunities of China's new energy industry, focusing primarily on the development of battery technology and CATL's breakthroughs. Meanwhile, he encouraged students to build a solid theoretical foundation while aligning their career paths with personal aspirations, national development, and market demands with an open and innovative mindset.


During the Q&A session, faculty and students engaged in a lively discussion with Academician Wu on topics such as enhancing the safety and conductivity of battery materials.

At the end of the event, Dean Jun Ni presented Academician Wu with a commemorative gift.
The thought-provoking lecture deepened the participants' understanding of the technological development of power batteries. It inspired students to draw strength from their dedication to the nation and shoulder the responsibilities for a global cause, bolstering cutting-edge scientific and technological progress in the new era.
