On 29th August 2024, Wu Kai, Chief Scientist of CATL, officially signed a contract to join the Global Institute of Future Technology (GIFT) at Shanghai Jiaotong University(SJTU) as a Chair Professor.

Distinguished Professor and National Excellent Engineer at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. An alumnus of the university, he completed his undergraduate degree in Naval Architecture in 1989. He went on to earn a master's degree in Ship Structural Mechanics in 1992 from the School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering, followed by a doctoral degree in Applied Chemistry in 2014 from the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Currently, he holds the position of Chief Scientist at Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL).
Wu Kai is a prominent leader in the field of power batteries, known for his significant breakthroughs in key materials, product design and integration, manufacturing processes, and equipment for power batteries. His series of innovative achievements have led the rapid development of China's power battery technology. As a key contributor, he has received several prestigious awards, including the National Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Prize), the Special Award for Technological Invention from the China Society of Automotive Engineers, the Special Award for Scientific and Technological Progress from the China Society of Automotive Engineers, the Fujian Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award (First Prize), and the European Inventor Award. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to promoting national strategic scientific and technological innovation and energy industry upgrading, he was awarded the inaugural title of National Excellent Engineer by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council in 2023. Additionally, he is a member of the National Automotive Standardization Technical Committee and the Vice Chairman of its Electric Vehicle Subcommittee.
Wu Kai has consistently supported the development of GIFT, actively engaging in talent training, industry-education integration, and cutting-edge technology research. He actively participates in a range of activities organized by the Institute and, as a guest professor at GIFT, plays a significant role in developing top-tier talent and fostering collaboration between universities and businesses. His efforts help establish a hub for talent aggregation. From a corporate standpoint , he identifies practical technological needs and, through the Clean Energy Technology Joint Research Center, collaborates with multiple colleges at SJTU. Together, they to focus on achieving technological breakthroughs, promoting the commercialization of scientific and technological achievements, and creating a hub for joint innovation between industry universities and-research institutions.

Drawing from his own interdisciplinary and comprehensive growth experience, Wu Kai will keep contributing to the reform of university-enterprise joint talent cultivation, further promoting the cultivation of industry leaders. He will leverage the strengths of the strong collaboration between Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) to facilitate the interdisciplinary and joint development of various disciplines at SJTU, including mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, naval architecture, materials science, and chemistry. As a leader in his field, Wu Kai will also support the development of young faculty at SJTU, focusing on practical challenges to advance future battery technologies and foster innovations and growth within the battery industry.
