On July 26th, CCTV's Newsroom provided an in-depth report on the active exploration and significant achievements of Future Technology Institute in aligning with national strategic needs, supporting key technological breakthroughs, and focusing on the independent cultivation of innovative talents. Among them, Shanghai Jiao Tong University's GIFT, as one of the first batches of Future Technology Institutes in China, has established a new paradigm for future technological innovation and the cultivation of leading talents with its unique educational philosophy and innovative training model.
GIFT has achieved remarkable results in the integration of industry and education, as well as in cross-disciplinary talent cultivation. It is dedicated to breaking down the boundaries of learning, disciplines, and schools, with the goal of nurturing innovative talents who possess forward-thinking and interdisciplinary skills. The Institute focuses on major technological developments in future energy and health, and is a pioneer in China in offering two cross-disciplinary majors: Sustainable Energy and Health Science and Technology. It has established multiple cutting-edge research platforms, including those for batteries, photovoltaics, energy storage, brain imaging, and health monitoring.
In terms of talent cultivation mode, the Institute breaks down traditional professional barriers by leveraging the integration of industry and education, as well as the fusion of science and education. It provides fine-grained, modular, and customized course options, aiming to give more personalized choices to students At the same time, GIFT deepens cooperation with enterprises, jointly establishes teaching laboratories, implements a dual-mentor system, and enables students to conduct research practices in enterprises. It has established an undergraduate-master-doctorate training system that is student-centered and oriented towards the cultivation of exceptional abilities.
“Both the research and talent training platforms are created together with industry leaders or healthcare organisations, which not only help in the exploration and research of forward-looking scientific research, but also provide a valuable interdisciplinary talent training base.”
This series of measures has delivered strategic, international science and technology leaders for future industries, demonstrating GIFT’s leadership in higher education innovation.
