On the afternoon of 15 December, SJTU-CATL strategic cooperation signing ceremony and GIFT development strategy seminar was held in the report hall of GIFT, Minhang Campus of SJTU.
Zeng Yuqun, Chairman of the Board of Directors of CATL, Councilor of SJTU and Honorary Dean of GIFT, Li Ping, Vice Chairman of CATL, Wu Kai, Chief Scientist, Chen Guangming, Founder of Ruiyuan Fund and Councilor of SJTU, Yang Zhenbin, Secretary of the Party Committee of SJTU, Ding Kuiling, President of SJTU and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ma Dexiu, Former Secretary of the Party Committee of SJTU, , Vice Presidents Xu Xuemin, Xi Lifeng, and Zhu Xinyuan, Wu Zhengyi, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the Medical College and Vice Dean of GIFT, Zheng Xingdong, president of the First People’s Hospital attached to the Medical College, Ni Jun, Dean of GIFT and Chief Manufacturing Officer of CATL, and leaders of relevant departments attended the activity, which was hosted by Xi Lifeng.
Wu Kai and GIFT representatives on behalf of the two sides signed a co-operation agreement, with Zeng Yuqun, Li Ping, Yang Zhenbin, Ding kuiling, Ma Dexiu, Xu Xuemin, Xi Lifeng, Zhu Xinyuan, Ni Jun and Wu Zhengyi witnessing. According to the agreement, the two sides will follow the “advantage complementarity, resource sharing, win-win co-operation, cooperative development” principle and launch a new round of strategic co-operation around the cross-field scientific research cooperation, joint talent training, practice social responsibility to serve people’s livelihoods and other aspects.
At the signing ceremony, Yang Zhenbin and Ding Kuiling also presented a congratulatory letter to Zeng Yuqun, expressing congratulations on behalf of the university for winning the Nobel Prize for Special Contribution to Sustainable Development 2023.
At the seminar on the development strategy of GIFT, Ni Jun introduced the background of the construction of the institute, the progress of the construction, as well as the challenges and prospects of the future development. In the past two years since the establishment of the institute, with the care and support of all parties, the institute's high-level talent team has been growing, the interdisciplinary cross-scientific research capacity has emerged, and the reputation has been steadily improved. In the future, the institute will continue to explore in talent training, team building, scientific research and other aspects, and deeply promote the integration of industry and education.
Zeng Yuqun said in his speech that GIFT is a prominent embodiment of the deep cooperation between CATL and SJTU to carry out industry-university-research. It is hoped that both sides will take the signing of the new round of cooperation agreement as an opportunity to jointly cultivate scientific and technological innovation talents with cross disciplines, carry out organised applied scientific research, accelerate the innovation breakthrough and application transformation of core key technologies, achieve sustainable upgrading and iteration of the existing technology field, and work hand in hand to lead the times and promote the realisation of high-quality development.
Ding Kuling emphasised that GIFT should break the boundary of disciplines and condense the future technology direction with unique advantages and clear positioning. To break the boundary of learning, connect students' school learning and enterprise practice organically, connect the cultivation of undergraduates with that of postgraduate students, and promote the deep integration of industry, academia and research. It is necessary to break the boundaries of schools, create opportunities for students to engage in international exchanges and visit schools for further study, and make global competence an important training goal.
Yang Zhenbin pointed out that it is the development trend of education for first-class universities and leading enterprises to jointly promote the integration of industry and education, and it is also an effective way to achieve the integration of education, science and technology, and talent promotion. Looking to the future, the two sides should focus on research and development of core key technologies, cultivate future leaders, and practice the mission of serving people's livelihoods, to create a SJTU-CATL paradigm of the deep integration of industry, academia and research. GIFT will seize the opportunity to make due contribution to building a strong country of higher education, serving the high-quality development of the economy and realising the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

On the morning of 15th, Zeng Yuqun and Wu Kai held a discussion with the representative teachers of GIFT.
Before the signing ceremony on the afternoon of 15th, Zeng Yuqun delivered a speech at GIFT Distinguished Lecture held in Chen Ruiqiu Building Lecture Hall to more than 500 students and teachers of SJTU, to share his experience of studying and entrepreneurship under the leadership of the innovative spirit, as well as CATL’s future layout of the industry and outlook around the promotion of the global sustainable development. Leaders such as Ding Kuiling, Xi Lifeng, Ni Jun and Wu Zhengyi attended the lecture.
