Recently, our institute has been officially named Global Institute of Future Technology (Abbreviated as GIFT).
According to Dean Ni Jun, in order to highlight the uniqueness of the Institute, the namingwassolicited and discussed repeatedly by many parties. The name reflects our global vision and bears the meaning that the Institute is committed to cultivating gifted students by a team of gifted faculty, which is in line with our mission.
The Chinese name of the Institute, 溥渊 (Pu Yuan), derived from The Doctrine of the Mean, means broadness and profoundness. Pu (溥) represents broadness, while Yuan (渊) refers to profoundness, meaning that what is being conducted here in the Institute shall be broad as the sky and deep as the earth. This conforms to the spirit of connection between heaven and earth behind SJTU’s name.
As one of the first 12 institutes of future technology initiated by the Ministry of Education in May this year, GIFT is committed to building itself into an interdisciplinary platform and an international community, by integrating high-quality resources on and off campus, and relying on disciplinary strengths in relevant fields of science, engineering, and medicine. Ni Jun said that the Institute has mapped out short-, mid- and long-term plans to become aleader of research and education in the development of global future energy, health and manufacturing technologies, and talent training by 2031-2035.
