In order to deepen the cooperation and co-construction relationship between Global Institute of Future Technology(hereafter GIFT) and Xishan District of Wuxi City, and to promote the synergistic development of government, industry, academia and research, teachers and students of GIFT went to Xishan to carry out the study and practice activities of “Wisdom Convergence in Xishan, Innovation for the Future” from 7th to 9th July.
On the morning of 8 July, the launching ceremony of the study and practice series and the awarding ceremony of “Future Technology Taihu Lake Scholarship” were held in the Yangtze River Delta (Wuxi) International Talent Port. Gu Wenhao, the mayor of Xishan District People's Government, and Ni Jun, dean of GIFT, attended the event and delivered speeches. Hou Haifeng, deputy director of Wuxi Bureau of Science and Technology, Ge Min, deputy secretary of Xishan District Party Committee and deputy mayor of Xishan District Government, Zhang Aijun, member of Standing Committee of Xishan District Party Committee and minister of United Front Work Department, Dai Xing, deputy mayor of Xishan District People's Government, Yang Ming, secretary of Party Committee of Joint College, Zhang Jie, deputy minister of United Front Work Department, Shen Yongxing, deputy dean of UM-SJTU Joint Institute, Wang Chong, deputy secretary of Party Committee of Joint College, as well as representatives of the students and faculty members of The GIFT Future Scholar Program and students who won the scholarships attended the activity. The event was hosted by Ge Min.
Gu Wenhao delivered a speech and expressed his warm welcome to the leaders, entrepreneur representatives, teachers and students who came to the activity. He said, the study and practice activities jointly organised by Xishan and GIFT is a high affirmation of the results of the past cooperation between the two sides, and also lays a solid foundation for deeper cooperation in the future. He said that Xishan, as the “east gate” of Wuxi, has planted the fertile soil of innovation and entrepreneurship, livable and workable, and has made every effort to build the optimal talent ecology, and he hoped that with this activity as an opportunity, GIFT’s high-quality talents and technical resources can be attracted to help Xishan’s prosperous development.
Dean Ni Jun delivered a speech. He introduced the history and achievements of the co-operation and co-construction between GIFT at SJTU and Xishan District. He said that in recent years, Xishan has a close connection with the research field of GIFT in emerging industries such as biomedicine, medical devices, new materials, artificial intelligence and other advantageous industries such as electric vehicles. He hoped that in the future, both the university and the district can establish a regular mechanism of cooperation between the university and the district, give full play to the role of practice bases in educating people, and smooth the channels of transforming and applying the scientific research results, so as to make a positive contribution to the development of the country’s future scientific and technological innovations and the leadership of training innovative talents for the future.
At the award ceremony, 16 recipients of “Future Technology Taihu Lake Scholarship (The GIFT Future Scholar Program Special)” and 21 recipients of “Future Technology Taihu Lake Scholarship (Science and Technology Innovation Special)” were commended.
“Future Scholars Innovation Workstation” of SJTU and “SJTU Social Practice Base” were simultaneously settled in Xishan.
After the awarding ceremony, the leaders and guests participated in the mid-term exhibition of The GIFT Future Scholar Program and exchange meeting. The GIFT Future Scholar Program participating students focused on 17 cutting-edge scientific projects in the direction of sustainable energy, health science and technology, etc., and presented them to the participating enterprises and students, with a warm atmosphere of exchange on the spot.
On the afternoon of 8th July, the mid-term evaluation meeting of The GIFT Future Scholar Program was held. The GIFT Future Scholar Program has been progressing well since its launch in February this year, and this review is not only a concentrated display of the stage results, but also a good opportunity to enhance the communication and interaction between The GIFT Future Scholar Program and students and tutors, to inspire each other and make progress together.
On 9th July, teachers and students of GIFT and UM-SJTU Joint Institute went to China Nanshan Wuxi Telematics Town, Beehive Energy and other high-quality innovative high-tech enterprises in Xishan District to carry out study and practice; at the same time, they visited the former residences of alumni Lu Dingyi and Tang Junyuan to feel and learn the spirit of patriotism and the local humanistic heritage, which drew a successful conclusion for the study and practiceactivity.
