Shanghai Jiao Tong University Global Institute of Future Technology (GIFT hereafter) is one of the first 12 institutes of future technology initiated by China’s Ministry of Education, and is by far the only one based in Shanghai. Officially inaugurated on August 19, 2021, GIFT is committed to establishing an international faculty team with great impact, building up several cutting-edge interdisciplinary platforms of teaching and research, and nurturing scientific and technological leaders with global vision, devotion to our country and innovative spirit, as required for realizing China’s second centenary goal.

Vast as the sky, deep as the earth, while keeping pace with the times, GIFT provides solutions to problems of global significance and cultivates future leaders of industries by integrating high-quality resources on and off campus, aiming at frontier science, and focusing on fields such as sustainable energy and health science and technology. By 2025, the Institute aims to form a model for training talents that caters to the needs of future development and complete the preliminary steps of building a top institute of future technology in China, through putting in efforts on both attracting and training talents, integrating industry and education innovation, and exploring patterns of interdisciplinary talent cultivation. By 2030, the Institute aims to establish a top-notch faculty team with notable results in talent training, and to stand out in the research community both at home and abroad with achievements in frontier scientific research. And by 2035, leaders with global influence will continue to emerge, and original discoveries with major impacts will continue to be produced. The Institute will not only establish a mature management system, but also produce spillover effects, and it will become a leading engineering institute in the training of global future technology talents and the development of industry innovation.

The on-campus office of GIFT is located in the east wing of Yue-Kong Pao Library on the Minhang campus of SJTU, and the off-campus transition place is located at 1555, Du Hui Road. Located in the North Campus, the new building of the Institute is still under design and construction, with a usable area of 60,000 square meters, and is scheduled to be completed in 2025. Once inaugurated, it will form a twin building with the adjacent CATL Future Energy Research Institute. Together, these two aims to become a highland leading the development of future energy and health technology industries.
